One of the main pillars of APEC is technical and economic cooperation. Therefore, the Forum has a project financing programme. The APEC projects are a fundamental tool to turn the objectives of economic and technical cooperation into actions, and to support the implementation of the political orientations of Leaders and Ministers.
At each of the yearly sessions, the different projects presented by the twenty-one economies compete for the available funds. They must fulfil the established qualitative requirements. For example, the projects must be always presented in English and be aligned with the priorities of the year and with the objectives of the fund they are applying for.
Projects can be of diverse nature, including studies, publications or research, innovation forums, training workshops, seminars, etc., and to be successful the proposal must be beneficial and useful for all member economies, this is to say, they cannot have only a domestic focus.
The period between a project’s application, selection, development, and notification of funding allocation is approximately 5 months.
In 2019, more than US$15 million were allocated to finance more than 100 projects on various topics and areas, such as: network creation for women in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); promoting the participation of indigenous women in local economies; adapting to climate change and its impact on the coasts; and integrating good regulatory practices into the new Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), among others.
During 2018 and 2019, Chile was granted funds for a total of US$ 3.868.829 to develop 30 projects (18 and 12 respectively) in the following areas: sustainable use of water; combating illegal logging; participation of women in the mining sector; rural development; mechanisms to promote energy solutions in remote areas; combating bribery and money laundering; adaptation to climate change and reduction of its effects on coastal areas; promoting the competitiveness and productivity of entrepreneurial ecosystems; supporting SMEs in adopting the digital transformation; and inclusion of women in non-traditional sectors, among others".
In 2020, Chile was (preliminarily) awarded 8 projects for a total of USD 805,754 to execute initiatives in the area of: digital transformation of MSMEs; resilience of remote areas to promote post-pandemic tourism; women and the digital economy; skills development for the digital age; global value chains in the digital economy, and artisanal fishing and reducing the environmental impact of aquaculture activity.
